Quilt-A-Long – Page Two

Sew, did you collect your fabrics for the quilt along? I hope sew!! First up, we’ll be making four-patches.

First, cut your strips, width of fabric (WOF,) 2 1/2”.* I started with two strips each color, if there was enough of that scrap.

Pair up a light and a dark strip and sew. Place each pair right sides together and stitch the long edges using 1/4” seam allowance. I started with about twenty strips each color.

Of course, you can start with making a few and make a table runner or a small wall hanging if you prefer to start small. (I’m not sure how many strips you’ll need if you go smaller, but you can always sew more!!)

Press seams toward the dark fabric.

Line up strips, right sides together so seams ‘nest’ together. Line up on cutting board and cut 2 1/2” strips. Straighten and line up as you cut, sometimes the strips move a little as you cut.

I got 15-sub-cuts per strip. We’ll need one hundred and forty sets. Carefully stack the pairs until you have all strips cut. If you don’t move them much, you shouldn’t have to pin, just double check that your seams are still nested together.

Next, stitch each subset together using a 1/4” seam. If you’re comfortable with chain sewing, stitch the subcuts one right after the other until all are sewn. You’ll have them done in no time.

Sets chain stitched.

Trim the thread between each 4-patch. I put each color set in a pile.

Press each 4-patch open.

Hebrews 13:16 And do not neglect doing good and sharing, for with such sacrifices God is pleased.

So far I have 75 four-patches. We only need 140, remember? Sew far, sew good!!

You have a week to get your 4-patches made!! Sew to it!!

Get your blue and white fabrics out and ready for next weeks quilt along.

Also, if you are making the quilt along and your able, please take a few pictures and post along with us.

Recently I was talking with my friend about the quilt along. She said she wanted to do it, but didn’t want to mail it (to me) for the Quilt of Valor. To clarify, if you are participating in the quilt along, you should plan to donate it to your local veteran (VA hospital, VFW) or just make a patriotic quilt for yourself.

* The blogger I’m following for the quilt along uses her Accuquilt cutter and dies, so if you are using an Accuquilt cutter, cut enough squares for one hundred and forty 4-patches. Also, she is making her quilt using bigger squares, so if you follow both blogs, be sure to double check which measurements you plan to use.

Another blogger also doing the quilt-a-long is making the same size I’m making.

Catch up with what’s happening.
