The Boys

Ecclesiastes 10:18 When someone is too lazy to repair his roof, it will leak, and the house will fall in.

So, I had a little hole in my roof. I should have been more observant to notice it sooner. It’s not so much that I’m lazy as the verse states, more that I don’t have the right skills and tools to tackle the job. Then finding someone willing to do the job and help me out is a whole ’nother story. Anyway, I stopped by the Amish guy’s house that did my nephews roof to see if he might be able to patch it for me.

He threw the rope over the roof and tied it to the tree. OSHA safety first. I thought he was going to tie the rope around his waist, but he didn’t. He just held on to it.

My nephew brought him and one of his employees to help over. Carrying 10-12 shingles up.

Starting the air compressor for the nail gun.

He started with about ten shingles.

Here you can see him holding the safety rope with one hand.

While the Amish were climbing the roof, my nephew was climbing one of my maples. I reminded him of the old, fragile branches and to be careful.

He assured me the branches were sturdy. Earlier he went hunting down back looking for deer or partridge. When he returned, I asked if he saw anything. “Only bear tracks.”

Resting at the chimney.

He saw a couple other problem shingles and fixed those while he was up there.

I asked how much I owed him and he said he’d send a bill. Then he asked me if I had any old stuff. He obviously doesn’t know me. All my favorite things are old and rusty rather than new and plastic. He was looking for a wringer washing machine, adding they are becoming hard to come by now. I decided he would have been willing to barter for the washer had I had one. Gram had one and I remember her using it, but of all my rusty things, that’s one thing I don’t have anymore. I told him I’d keep an eye out for one.

An hour later they were done.

Later that evening.

The Ice Men Cut-th

Psalm 147:18 He sends out His word and melts the ice; He causes His wind to blow and the waters to flow.

Since I heard there would be another ice harvesting, I decided to take another ride to see if I could get some pictures. I don’t think I understand how water freezes. I’ve seen a lot of open water, yet I know people are on the water/ice. Even my nephew went ice fishing with his friends a couple weeks ago.

Again on this trip I got a little bit lost!! Can you believe it?!? I’ve lived here all my life so I should know my way around. To my credit, I rarely go anywhere except my road. And, another part of the problem is a few roads have new names. That can confuse an old mind.

Once in a while I came across a familiar landmark. Like this house, I’m pretty sure it’s the house where my childhood friend grew up. We have been friends since the first grade. Now we only see each other occasionally, but those visits pick up right where we left off.

Another fairly large Amish farm. It’s across the road from here that there’s a pond that will probably be ice harvested soon. I’ll have to come back.

A couple days later we were expecting a snow storm so I didn’t drive by to see if anything was happening.

As it turned out, the Amish were harvesting the ice this day ahead of the storm. Scrolling through FB, I noticed some pictures of the ice harvesting and asked the photographer if I could use some of her pictures. I hope you enjoy them.

These saws run on vegetable oil so not to contaminate the ice.

May be an image of one or more people, people standing, snow and nature

Working the ice field.

One block at a time.

After the 6” – 8” of snow we got, the next day I drove by to see if maybe they were doing another section. Not today, but you could see where the ice harvesting had been.

The Ice

If you have been following the blog, you may have read the pages in which my nephew hired a local Amish crew to do the trusses and roof of their new log home. During that time I had a few occasions to talk with the Amish guy and one thing I mentioned was that I would enjoy seeing them harvest the ice.

He remembered and had his contractor get a message to me that they were going to be getting ice the next day.

I took a ride over to see the process and get a few pictures. On the way I got some other pictures. These sunflowers were my first stop.

Next stop, one of the farms. I thought I knew where I was going.

As I was still looking for a pond or lake, I saw this manure spreader.

Driving along, I came across an Amish school house at recess. I asked if I could get a picture and one young lady said yes.

Another farm and furniture business. You can see a horse and buggy if you look closely. About this time I still hadn’t seen any evidence of ice harvesting and I said to myself, “I’m going to be in Canada pretty soon.” I might be a little lost.

Luke 19:10 For the Son of Man has come to seek and to save that which was lost.”

Well, well, well. At least I had an internal map instinct. Maybe I should turn on my talking map.

After turning around at the border, I was greeted by this sign. Years ago, the sign was always something like, ‘Welcome to Friendly Fort Fairfield,’ or Easton, Madawaska, or wherever the crossing was. This one I didn’t find to be so friendly.

I had to get a picture of this potato loader. We had one like it during my farming days. It took me back a couple decades; or more; and I remembered loading hundreds, thousands, probably millions of barrels of potatoes.

Three beauties.

The left guy.

The middle guy.

The right guy.

Another beauty. Being lost wasn’t a total loss.

This buggy is what I call a convertible since there’s no top. It’s not a great picture, but in the back facing my car we’re two small children. They had to be two or three years old. If you look closely you can almost see one has a hat on and the other doesn’t. I waved and they waved back to me.

I managed to get unlost and decided to go home for lunch. As I was scrolling through FB a friend posted some pictures he got from ice harvesting. I wrote to find out where and decided to take another ride. These guys were on the way.

I got a few pictures, but they were quite a ways away.

Returning to the pond.

A load of ice on the way to the ice house.

I thought he would be coming closer to the road, but he seemed to be going away from it.

There might be another ice harvesting coming up so hopefully I’ll be able to get some closer pictures. Stay tuned.

The Ridge

The next morning I got up to find it had snowed a little overnight. By mid-morning it had changed to rain and was about 47°. Although the temperatures were not too cold, I knew the Amish crew wouldn’t be working this day.

Psalm 107:8-9 Let them give thanks to the LORD for his unfailing love and his wonderful deeds for mankind, for he satisfies the thirsty and fills the hungry with good things.

They still had the ridges to shingle.

You can see the gap at the peak. Depending on the weather tomorrow, I’ll go over and see what’s going on.

So the rain turned to snow again overnight. I went by the house and didn’t see the Amish crew, but I saw evidence that they were around. It was spitting snow and around 15°.

I’m not sure what they are doing with these boards on the roof. I’ll try to remember to ask him if I see him.

The end enclosed.

The horses.

The next day I went to see what was going on, the interior package and the windows were scheduled to arrive. It was snowing a little and really cold, probably around 20°.

Psalm 9:1 I will give thanks to you, LORD, with all my heart; I will tell of all your wonderful deeds.

Horse power …

… versus horse power.

It must have been coffee break time while I was there, again this day I only saw their horses.

Two or three days later I was at the house and the Amish had finished the ridge. Here you can see the black from the shingles rather than the white paper in above pictures.

The next day I stopped by the house, it was overcast and about 43°. I knew it must be warm because the windows were open.

He said they passed something through the window.

The finished ridge.

They had finished these eave corners since the last time I was there.

This was the last day for the Amish crew. They were finishing up small details and packing up. I had a chance to talk with them a few minutes. I mentioned that they did everything quite quickly so I asked him if he kept track of how long it took him. He said including a couple of half days, it took them 12-days.

Another question I asked about was if they celebrated Thanksgiving recently. He explained that they do, saying it is a high holiday and they fast all morning. Then the meal and after they do whatever they want, adding that he went out to do some target shooting.

I had to ask, “did you have a turkey that you raised from an egg?” He didn’t, but said that some did.

I also asked if his horses were going to haul the trailer. He said they weren’t, but that work horses could haul it with a sturdier buggy. A man they contract with would take the trailer to the next job location.

I wished him well and thanked him for letting me get a few pictures and find out more about the Amish community these last few days.

See you later.

Fall is looking like winter.

Chilly Day for Chili

Matthew 4:4 But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘Man shall not live by bread alone, but by every word that proceeds from the mouth of God.’ ”

The next day I went to the log home it was a beautiful sunny day. A little chilly start though at 32°. So, I thought a little chili for lunch.

We had a tailgate picnic in the sun.

Graham cracker pie for dessert.

Another curiosity seeker that stopped by to find out more about the the kids log home.

Ash put a swing up in the garage.

I was a little worried about this OSHA accident waiting to happen.

The Winch

The next day I went over to the house, the roof was on and I went inside. It was about 40° and a little overcast. It was the windchill that made it feel a lot colder, maybe 30°. Someone left the windows open.

Support walls and trusses.

1 Chronicles 16:34 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever.

This day I set up lunch on the staging, beef and broccoli, old fashioned molasses cookies and hot chocolate. We actually had lunch at the same time as the Amish crew, but I didn’t take pictures since they wouldn’t have been at a distance.

Aust adding wheels to his creation. Taking down some bracing.

The Shingles

Psalm 90:17 May the favor of the Lord our God rest on us; establish the work of our hands for us— yes, establish the work of our hands.

The next day I went to the house it was another pretty nice, but cloudy day starting off around 36°. The forecast was for rain in the afternoon so I stopped by in the morning.

When I arrived they were putting roofing barrier paper and drip things on the front. There’s probably a more technical name for them than drip things, but you probably know what I mean.

You may recall if you’ve been following the blog, that the school is right across the street from the house. He asked me why the kids weren’t in school today. They had noticed that there were no buses, kids or cars around.

I told him about the two potential coronavirus cases at the school and that they decided to close for about a week.

It gave me the opportunity to ask him what he thought about coronavirus. I was curious to find out how this virus is sooo smart that it knows the difference between not giving it to the Amish or giving it to someone like me.

He said that it’s just a virus that they (the government) have blown out of proportion to scare everyone and to close businesses. Adding that it’s just like every other virus and hits people with under lying health issues the hardest.

I asked him how come there’s no one in the Amish community here that has or had it. His reply was long, but basically was that they didn’t watch or listen to TV, radio or internet to make them fearful. He said he doesn’t understand what they are trying to do (to the country) with the virus.

I found his take on COVID-19 fascinating.

Around the back, they had shingled a section. They also had the winch system hooked up to the ladder with shingles on it. It looked different on the ladder than on the buggy. I hadn’t realized that it was the winch on the ladder in the last post, The Roof.

The winch.

The buggy that had the winch on it the other day, so probably they moved it closer to this section today.

One of the horses.

The other.

Before I left he asked me what the kids would do for school. I told him about the remote learning and ‘zoom’ classes.

The conversation with the Amish guy reminded me of who’s your god, who do you bow down to; TV, media, the government, your Instagram followers? Here’s another great Gaither Vocal Band song written with this verse in mind.

Exodus 20:3 “You shall have no other gods before me.

I’ll Worship Only At The Feet Of Jesus Lyrics By Gaither Vocal Band

I went to visit the shrine of plenty,
But found it stores all filled with dust,
I bowed at alters of gold and silver,
But as I knelt there they turned to rust.

So I’ll worship only at the feet of Jesus,
His cup alone, my holy grail,
There’ll be no other gods before Him,
Just Jesus only will never fail.

The call of fortune made me a pilgrim,
To journey to things promised us,
But as I climbed the promise faded,
And wind blew lonely all through the night.

So I’ll worship only at the feet of Jesus,

His cup alone, my holy grail,
There’ll be no other gods before Him,
Just Jesus only will never fail.

Just desert dust and empty shadows,
All promises that turned to lies,
The gods of earth failed and betrayed me,
You alone are truth and life.

So I’ll worship only at the feet of Jesus,
His cup alone, my holy grail,
There’ll be no other gods before Him,
Just Jesus only will never fail.
Just Jesus only will never fail…

The Roof

Deuteronomy 22:8 “When you build a new house, you shall make a parapet for your roof, so that you will not bring bloodguilt on your house if anyone falls from it.

A couple days later I went by the house on my way home to see what the Amish were up to.

At first I didn’t think they were there. It was about 34° and sunny with a windchill so it was more like 28°.

I walked around and took a few pictures.

Then I saw the horse and buggy. I could hear them talking and laughing so I knew they were around. Must have been coffee time.

Ephesians 4:26-27 “Do not let the sun go down while you are angry, and do not give the devil a foothold”

I love the sun shining through the trusses.

The next day I went over to the house again and the Amish crew had started enclosing the roof. It was sunny and chilly, probably about 25° and a windchill so probably 20°. Maybe even 18°.

Like yesterday, the Amish crew wasn’t around. There was evidence that they were there though, their work belts and buggies were there.

While I was getting some pictures, they came out of the contractors trailer saying the coffee is good when it’s cold out. I said they probably need to warm up every hour with temperatures like this.

I asked if I could get a picture of this buggy and how they used the equipment. I hadn’t really looked at it up close or I might have figured it out. He said that it’s a winch and explained they were going to use it to haul up the shingles.

I noticed the horses as I was getting pictures of the winch. I mentioned to him about it being so cold this morning that even the horses need blankets. He said since they aren’t working, they do (need blankets.) He added that if they were working they’d be sweating.

He cut a small piece of plywood and I asked about the saw. It runs on an air compressor.

Just before I was getting ready to leave, he brought over a piece of plywood and lifted it up to the second guy. He said they’d probably finish getting the plywood on today.

On the way home, I passed an Amish schoolhouse. It seemed like they just finished recess and were going back inside.

The next day I went over to the house again because I didn’t want to miss when they started the shingles.

They were still on the roof. It was probably about 20° and overcast.

I asked what they were doing today and I think he called it the ridge. It was the section that filled in to where the peaks meet.

One of the horses.

The other horse. While talking with him, he told me they used the horses yesterday to bring the plywood over to the other side of the house.

Which one is not like the others?

This one. It has some kind of lift on it.

While I was there, I ran into M. We talked for a few minutes when she got a text message from the school informing parents that school would be getting out at noon due to two-presumptive coronavirus cases in the school. The district would close and switch to remote learning for at least one-week.

The Trusses

Another record breaking day with a temperature of 67 in November. As I was getting ready to leave and see the second wall; I think they are called weight bearing walls; the kids sent me a text message that they had finished. Yeahhh!!

It was now time for the trusses to go up.

Romans 14:13 Therefore let us stop passing judgment on one another. Instead, make up your mind not to put any stumbling block or obstacle in the way of a brother or sister.

The kids had contracted with a local Amish guy to do the trusses and roof.

The next time I went over, the three-man crew was already there. The day was a little overcast and about 40°. One guy was inside (you can see him in the window) and the other two were moving trusses.

I talked with him a few minutes and confirmed with him about whether or not I could take some pictures for the blog. There have been posts on FB from others that take pictures of our local Amish and always have a disclaimer that they have permission to take pictures. He was fine with me taking pictures adding they don’t turn and pose for pictures.

They were grouping the trusses by size.

Measuring. He asked me what time it was, saying that he contracted with a crane guy and he should be there at 10:00. It was about 9:30 so I didn’t wait around. I’ll come back later or go over tomorrow.

Before I went to the land again, it was Aust’s birthday. He wanted a bowling party.

Bowlers

Giving Pae some pointers and talking over topics of the day.

A card from Grammie.

Aust wanted a cinnamon roll cake instead of a regular birthday cake. Auntie’s creative mind went into overdrive. I thought he would take off a cinnamon roll to serve it, but he sliced it like a piece of cake.

He said I should put it on the internet with Hashtagcinnamonrollcake. He said it would be a hit!!

It’s tomorrow already!! Time flies in a blog page!! I could hardly believe most of the trusses were up!! I’m not sure about this one, if it’s on its way down or up into place. They still had the valley’s to do on this side.

Working on an overcast morning. We had a dusting of snow overnight so it was still chilly and about 34°.

The horse and buggy.

Looking in the living room.

A closer look.

As it turned out, M was able to get some pictures as the trusses were going up so she sent some for the blog.

She had to leave for a while and when she returned they had most of the center trusses in place.

She left again and this time when she returned at the end of daylight, one side was up and the other nearly done.

I tried to get the pictures in order, but I missed some. I don’t think anyone will mind seeing them again.

She got some inside shots too.

It looks so much different from when I was there that morning.

Let Freedom Ring, Gaither Vocal Band

Let Freedom Ring

Deep within the heart has always known that there was freedom
Somehow breathed into the very soul of life
The prisoner, the powerless, the slave have always known it
There’s something that keeps reaching for the sky

Even life begins because a baby fights for freedom
And songs we love to sing have freedom’s theme
Some have walked through fire and flood to find a place of freedom
And some faced hell itself for freedom’s dream

Let freedom ring wherever minds know what it means to be in chains
Let freedom ring wherever hearts know pain
Let freedom echo through the lonely streets where prisons have no key
We can be free and we can sing — let freedom ring

God built freedom into every fiber of creation
And He meant for us to all be free and whole
When my Lord bought freedom with the blood of His redemption
His cross stamped pardon on my very soul

I’ll sing it out with every breath, I’ll let the whole world hear it
This hallelujah anthem of the free
That iron bars and heavy chains can never hold us captive
The Son has made us free and free indeed

Let freedom ring down through the ages from a hill called Calvary
Let freedom ring wherever hearts know pain
Let freedom echo through the lonely streets where prisons have no key
You can be free and you can sing let freedom ring
Let freedom echo through the lonely streets where prisons have no key
You can be free and you can sing let freedom ring
You can be free and you can sing — let freedom ring — let freedom ring
